Types of Australia Family Visas

Below are the major categories of family visas offered by the Australian Government:

Partner Visas (Subclass 820/801 and 309/100)

For spouses or de facto partners of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens.

• Subclass 820/801 – For onshore applicants (apply while in Australia)

• Subclass 309/100 – For offshore applicants (apply from outside Australia)

• Initially granted as temporary, leading to permanent residency

Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300)

For fiancé(e)s of Australian citizens or permanent residents who plan to marry in Australia within 9 months of visa grant.

• Allows entry and stay in Australia

• After marriage, applicants can apply for a Partner Visa

Child Visa (Subclass 101 & 802)

For dependent children of Australian citizens or permanent residents.

• Subclass 101 – Apply outside Australia

• Subclass 802 – Apply inside Australia

• Child must be under 18, or up to 25 if a full-time student and financially dependent

Parent Visas (Subclass 103, 804, 143, 173)

For parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents to live in Australia either permanently or temporarily.

• Contributory Parent Visa – Faster processing but higher fees (Subclass 143/173)

• Non-Contributory Parent Visa – Lower fee but longer wait time (Subclass 103/804)

• Balance of Family Test applies (at least half your children must live in Australia)

Aged Dependent Relative & Carer Visas

For older relatives who are financially dependent or who need full-time care due to medical conditions.

Basic Eligibility Criteria

• Sponsor must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen

• Must prove genuine family relationship

• Must meet character and health requirements

• Must meet financial dependency or support requirements, where applicable

• Must provide evidence of intent to live together (for partner categories)
